Ceres Rail Company offers a magnificent return trip to the Elgin Railway Market aboard our historic passenger train. Our train is usually hauled by a heritage steam locomotive and a diesel, but at times, due to the fire risk and other events beyond our control, the trip may be hauled by two diesel locomotives.
The journey begins at 07h45 from the platform at Harbour Bridge Hotel and Suites, Dockrail Road, Foreshore, Cape Town. Once aboard you will enjoy a 3-hour rail experience to Elgin, traveling through the beautiful Cape, up the majestic Sir Lowrys Pass, and then down into the Elgin Valley. We have a fully licensed cash bar on board as well as a dining car providing coffee and other snacks. Various books and memorabilia are also available for purchase onboard. We also have a card machine to make life easier.
Our destination is the fabulous Art Deco & Art Nouveau inspired Elgin Railway Market (www.elginrailwaymarket.co.za) where you will spend a few hours at your leisure. At the market, whilst enjoying the live music, you can wander through the many stalls offering delicious food, a wide selection of local wines, ciders and gin. Various bespoke craft stalls selling a wide range of goods including jewellery, leather goods, wire art, etc are also on site. There is a wonderful play area outside for the children to enjoy too.
We depart from Elgin at 14h15 , arriving back Cape Town at approximately 18h00.

Our train trip on the Ceres Rail was absolutely one of the most pleasant experiences we ever had. From the greeting on the platform by Rina and Reggy, we felt like royalty. The whatsapp group that was established for our trip, kept us informed the whole day. What an amazing idea! We were very comfortable in the bar lounge, seating was excellent, as we could move around and experience the beautiful views on both sides of the train. Definitely recommend this option. Thank you to each and every one who made our trip so memorable and special. A must do, for every person. Kind Regards Loraine Swanepoel - Loraine Swanepoel
A most excellent day trip on 1950's and older train carriages. The steam train needs a bit of encouragement from more modern diesel to get up the hill at sir lowries, but its as authentic as you'll get nowadays. A definitively great day out for the entire family. Elgin market is a little bit to touristy for my tastes, but you're really there for the train journey. The ride is the point, not the destination, and its oh so great looking out the carriage windows watching the world travel by at a relaxed pace. Staff on the train are happy, helpful and full of knowledge, and a laugh if you need one. Downside to all this is you can see the decrepit state of Prasa stations along the way. Well worth doing and kudos to the ceres rail company for keeping the equipment running. - Laurence Sheed
This is the Second time I have taken this excellent excursion and I'll look forward to doing another with I return to Cape Town, it's a great day out. - Antony Bowley
A lovely way to see some of the countryside surrounding Cape Town. We sat in the bar area, which I would recommend rather than a carriage which you may have to share. Limited refreshments on the train but there are plenty of places to eat at Elgin before your return trip. Good value for money. - Helen Coates
A truly wonderful experience. I will definitely recommend. - Mike Wood
