Steam Train to Elgin - Voucher - Family Coupè (2 adults, 2 children OR 3 adults)

Cape Town

Activity Description

Ceres Rail Company offers a magnificent return trip to the Elgin Railway Market aboard our historic passenger train. Our train is usually hauled by a heritage steam locomotive and a diesel, but at times, due to the fire risk and other events beyond our control, the trip may be hauled by two diesel locomotives.

The journey begins at 07h45 from the platform at Harbour Bridge Hotel and Suites, Dockrail Road, Foreshore, Cape Town. Once aboard you will enjoy a 3-hour rail experience to Elgin, traveling through the beautiful Cape, up the majestic Sir Lowrys Pass, and then down into the Elgin Valley. We have a fully licensed cash bar on board as well as a dining car providing coffee and other snacks. Various books and memorabilia are also available for purchase onboard. We also have a card machine to make life easier.

Our destination is the fabulous Art Deco & Art Nouveau inspired Elgin Railway Market (www.elginrailwaymarket.co.za) where you will spend a few hours at your leisure. At the market, whilst enjoying the live music, you can wander through the many stalls offering delicious food, a wide selection of local wines, ciders and gin. Various bespoke craft stalls selling a wide range of goods including jewellery, leather goods, wire art, etc are also on site. There is a wonderful play area outside for the children to enjoy too.
We depart from Elgin at 14h15 , arriving back Cape Town at approximately 18h00.

Customer Reviews

We took our 2 young boys on 26 February 2023, in the family coupe. Everything was AMAZING. Our eldest son is a train enthusiasts and this was a dream came true for him. The views, the experience, the staff you name it. The staff really is amazing. From Sharon whom i was bothering for weeks per email before the trip. A ray of sunshine! Made us feel like family. And gave my son a treat because it was his birthday trip. Rina also gave him a treat on departure. And Lizelle was such a joy to have around! Oh my goodness these ladies went out of their way to make us feel welcome! And the driver let our son go bonkers with the whistle while at the market. And almost every team members who passed us wished our son a happy birthday. The staff is incredible (sorry i don't know everyone's names) The market was amazing Food was GREAT and the play area for kids just as great. No boredom at all the whole time we were there. While at the market you can also take pictures with the locomotive The family coupe was bigger than we though it would be. My kids had so much fun and took their naps on the top bunk bed. The coupe was still sooo spacious even with it down and can be closed for privacy ( whether you like being alone or just need to change a diaper or breastfeed, no problem at all) just overall an amazing experience. Our pram that we took with for the youngest at the market, fit underneath the seat and we had a bag with toys for the kids which we could put away on the shelf when not being used. Like a tiny house on steroids :) There is also snacks and drinks available on the train itself and yes they have card facilities. We all would LOVE doing a trip again, especially if there is a longer trip or even a sleep over trip. From beginning to end it was a blessing to experience it. As my husband put it. If you are looking for a day without loadshedding in South Africa, take this trip. :) But seriously one of best decisions to do this trip. The type of memories that last a lifetime and is not unaffordable (if something is worth it you can save up if needed and this is worth it) Thank you to everyone that made it possible - Stacey-Lee Kriedemann

- Ansofie Booyens
