Cape Town, Cape Point

Activity Description

South African pensioners: age 60+ get special funicular rates, but only at the Cape Point ticket office, due to must identification validation to receive pensioner rate

Apart from offering visitors an exciting and novel method of travel, taking the Flying Dutchman funicular saves visitors an uphill walk from the car park to see the old lighthouse and enjoy the panoramic views.

The Flying Dutchman Funicular, also known as the Cape Point Funicular, is a funicular railway located at Cape Point. It is believed to be the only commercial funicular of its type in Africa, and takes its name from the local legend of the Flying Dutchman ghost ship.

The line runs from a lower station at the Cape Point car park, up an incline through dense fynbos to the upper lighthouse. The funicular leaves from the lower station every three minutes, comfortably accommodates 40 passengers per car, and can transport 450 persons to the upper lighthouse per hour, making it the ideal way to whisk closer to the lighthouse even during peak times.

Customer Reviews

Very ordinary experience. The Funicular was out of operation for the day. No reason was given. The power was on. There was no wind. Staff did not know why it wasn't operating. The replacement bus services were very ordinary. Such wonderful natural resources, a shame the operators don't know how to run a world class tourist facility. Wont be returning. - Glen

Very disappointing that this service has been unavailable (due to apparent maintenance) for so long. Seems like they are not interested in repairing the funicular because the taxi alternative they provide (for the same price!) may be much more profitable. - Francois

I visited Cape Point recently and was excited to use the funicular to reach the top, but it was a complete disappointment. Despite paying for tickets, the funicular was out of service with no prior notice. There were no clear updates or signs, and staff seemed indifferent about the inconvenience. For such a major attraction, I expected better organization and communication. If the funicular isn't operational, why are tickets still being sold? A very frustrating experience---definitely not worth the hassle or money! - Sameenah
