A Table Mountain classic, Skeleton Gorge is definitely the most sheltered and is an absolute favourite trail for locals and tourists alike. Meet at your accommodation and shuttle to the beautiful Kirstenbosch Gardens (official starting point). We head through the highly acclaimed gardens of Kirstenbosch, giving you a taste its unique flora including the more recently built Canopy Walkway. We leave the open space of the gardens and head up Skeleton Gorge on the lush eastern side of Table Mountain, offering a jungle setting and inland views. The path steepens gradually as you ascend, leading to a fun ladder section as we continue up the rocky ravine. The forest walk is shady and the distraction of beautiful flora and fauna makes the ascent that much easier. At the top of the ravine a short detour along the way leads to a ‘beach’ at the historic Table Mountain reservoirs.
As we now move across the table-top, there is a drastic change in vegetation with flower-strewn fynbos, crystal clear streams and panoramic views of Cape Town and the city’s surrounding mountain ranges. Reaching the highest point of the mountain, Maclear’s Beacon (1065m), the views open up to take in Table Bay and Robben Island. we then tackle the easiest section that meanders towards the Upper Cable Car station . The cable car down is an unforgettable experience as the car rotates and you enjoy 360-degree views. We conclude the tour with a transfer back to your hotel.

Matt is an excellent guide! Unfortunately for my wife and I, the weather did not go our way: strong winds and significant runoff from recent rains. We got about halfway up elevationwise---to the top of the ladders---but had to turn back due to the winds and high water levels. Matt gave us a detour on a contour trail to a rockslide so we could get our steps in and a nice view. We then returned to the gardens, our starting point, where Matt gave us a nice tour and lunch at the restaurant there. If you like hot chocolate, theirs is excellent! He then drove us to the front of the mountain at the base cable car station. The winds were howling! The cable car was not running. Even on a nice day, this is a very strenuous hike. If we made it all the way, it would have been over six miles to the top---the first part that we did accomplish was a relentless climb. If the cable car is not running, it's a little under two miles down.
